Who is a physiatrist?
A physiatrist — a specialist physician in physical medicine and rehabilitation — is a doctor who, after completing a full medical degree (MD), specialises through internship and residency. This is where the authority to diagnose, give injections and perform manipulation comes from.
Who is a physiotherapist?
A physiotherapist is a specialist with a bachelor’s degree who can go on to a master’s degree and PhD, but who is not a physician. Physiotherapists deliver treatment under a physician’s supervision and are valued members of the physiatrist’s team.
Why does the difference matter?
In manual therapy, manipulation — releasing a joint with a quick, short movement — may only be performed by a physician trained in it. Mobilisation and muscle stretching techniques can also be applied by a physiotherapist. More: Manual therapy.
Every profession has its own name
In medicine, every field has its own name and its own responsibilities. Addressing physiotherapists, dietitians, psychologists and other specialists by their own professional titles shows respect both for them and for the medical profession.
