Conditions

Sciatica and piriformis syndrome

If low back pain shoots down your leg, the cause may not simply be tiredness.

What can cause pain spreading from the buttock down the leg?

Tension in the piriformis muscle can put pressure on the sciatic nerve and cause pain that spreads to the buttock, thigh and leg. Sitting for long periods, physical strain and certain movement problems make these symptoms worse.

What does sciatic nerve compression lead to?

Pain caused by compression of the sciatic nerve can seriously reduce everyday quality of life. A long-term sedentary lifestyle or incorrect movements deepen the problem further. Pain spreading to the leg can also be linked to a disc herniation: Low back pain and disc herniation.

How is it treated?

With a proper assessment and an individual physiotherapy programme, it is possible to help reduce pain and restricted movement. The approach is based on physiotherapy, an individual exercise programme and timely intervention.

Don’t ignore the pain — find its cause and start the right treatment.
